Homework: John 8:12-30
Wow, long time no post.
I gave my word at Bible study Wednesday night that I would post the "homework" assignment for next Wednesday, so here it is.
We are going to be spending our time together studying yet another intense dialogue between Jesus and the Jewish leaders who are seething with murderous rage, plotting to take Jesus' life.
This particular passage ends with Jesus' statement that "Before Abraham was 'I am.'" The Jewish leaders take up stones to kill Jesus for blasphemy...Christians should get the chills and respond with awe at this divine revelation that Jesus is the Great I Am, Yahweh.
So, here is what you need to do:
1) Read John 5: 16-30. Focus on the importance of what Jesus says. What hangs in the balance if we do not hear and respond to the words of Jesus?
2) Read John 7: 25-52 then 8:12-30 (skipping the story of the adulteress, like we talked about). Think about the imagery, the symbolism, that Jesus draws upon in speaking of who he is. Also, note any connections between this passage and what you already read in John 5.
3) Read Isaiah 42 and 49. What are these prophesies talking about? What connections, if any, do you see between the Isaiah passages and what Jesus says in John 7 and 9?

John 4:43-54 is what we will be looking at tonight.
Your assignment is pretty straight forward, read the text and think about what it teaches us about Jesus and what we learn from the father in his going to visit Jesus.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight, it should be fun.

Normally we have Bible study every single week when Lee and Beth are in town, but as you have probably already heard, tonight is the exception. Beth is just plain worn down and sick with a cold from two weeks of non-stop, action-packed, entertaining and home beautification, plus Lee's family is in town this week for Christmas.
As a result, there will be no Bible study tonight. We will however, meet as usual next Wednesday for our first Bible study of 2007.
Be sure to read up and prepare to talk about John 3:22-36. Be sure to study and think through the passage in its context. Ask yourself a lot of questions...what do we know about John the Baptizer that might illuminate what he is saying? What major themes in John show up in this passage? How does this passage fit with John's overall purpose in writing the book (John 20:30-31)? What does this passage teach me about Jesus? Do I love and honor Jesus like John the Baptizer does?
Be a people who examine the Scriptures. When a doctor examines a patient he does so by asking a lot of questions and synthesizing the answers in order to develop a right understanding of the problem. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions, it is true, does reveal an ignorance that we sometimes try not to acknowledge. It humbles us. In your humility ask God, the author of the Scriptures, to give you wisdom and understanding to understand and stir your heart to relish and take delight in the truth of God's word to us.
Study the Bible in this way and the Lord will change you and you, most importantly, will see him with greater clarity and joy.

Christmas Extravaganza!!!!
Sorry I'm late on this post, but I'm sure you will are forgive me when we have our super duper celebration of Christmas.
Since activities at the church are not going to be held this Wednesday, we thought that we might gather a bit early at the casa de Wilson (Wilson's house for all you non-Spanish speaking Kentuckians). So we will all arrive at 7:00 for the festivities to begin.
Plan on bringing the following:
1) A simple gift in the five dollar range for a gift swap (be creative or you will make the game suck and it will all be your fault)
2) Girls bring some sort of food to consume...when you decide what you will be bringing post it as a comment on this blog so we don't end up with 6 trays of brownies and no cookies.
3) Guys are responsible for bringing chips and some kind of dip (salsa, bean dip, whatever)
4) Write down a paragraph on a piece of paper that answers the following question: In the past year what have learned about Jesus and the gospel that has increased your delight in him the most?
Okay, I believe that you can all handle everything listed above. Remember, the door to bible study is open to everyone, so feel free to invite your friends to celebrate and have fun with us, something as simple as that can go a long way in affirming that Jesus really does bring full life and joy in his gospel.

Thanksgiving
This next week is Thanksgiving and I just wanted to make sure and remind everybody that there will be no bible study this upcoming Tuesday.
If Beth and I were going to be in town we will still be meeting, but since we are going to be back in Texas spending time with family, and Beth's grandparents are not set up for teleconferencing, we will have to wait until Tuesday, Nov. 29th to see yall.
Have a great Thanksgiving. I know for some people spending time with family can be really difficult and, for others, it come be sad as we remember the times we have spent with loved ones who have died in years past, so be praying for one another and remember that the gospel is about reconciliation, so live out the gospel regardless of what is in the past (or the present).
Much love friends

Wednesday November 15,2006
We just got done reading about Jesus' scathing dialogue with Nicodemus. I am hopeful Jesus' hard words created in Nicodemus a soft heart and led to his salvation. I don't know if that is the case, but I am hopeful. The point of hard words is the softening of our hearts...how does your heart respond to the harsh words of a friend? The hard teaching of Scripture? The hard teaching you hear at Bible study on Wednesday nights?
I pray all of our hearts are soft, receiving and repenting when we are confronted with our sin.
(That's all free, by the way)
This Wednesday we are going to be digging into what is arguably the most well known scripture in the entire world...John 3:16. So study John's commentary in John 3:16-21, examining your heart to see if the glorious truth that this passage contains still stirs you to worship. If not, did it ever stir you to worship?
Yes; then why is your heart cold to its truth right now?
No; is it possible for faith to be genuine if it is not a faith that bears fruit in worship and adoration of Jesus?
So, examine this passage and examine yourselves. Also, pull out your concordance or log on to biblegateway.com and reference some other passages that talk about "the world" and darkness/light imagery (hint: we have already talked about it in John...where might that be?)
Much love, I am praying for each of you.
